On July 14, 1997, approximately 150 people from the campus and Greater San Diego communities participated in two Town Meetings in which about 50 speakers offered ideas on extending UCSD's outreach activities.

Also, on July 30, 1997, the UCSD Task Force on K-12 Outreach sponsored a symposium of educators who have created, operated, or evaluated innovative educational programs designed to enable underserved children to achieve academic excellence. The panelists reviewed the programs in which they have been involved and discussed ideas to increase the numbers of underserved students who may qualify for admission to UCSD and other UC caliber schools.
